Partners bring Industry and Young People together

Two Magdalene Catholic High School teams, who recently became NSW State Finalists, are about to compete in the 2014 REA F1 in Schools National Competition in Canberra.

F1 in Schools is a competition where students design, build and race miniature Formula 1 cars. This project connects students to the engineering industry by making learning relevant and fun.

Students recently took a day out of their holidays to visit CJD Equipment P/L, Laserbond and Breseight Australia to learn more about these engineering companies and look at ways they could collaborate with them to incorporate the latest technologies into their Formula 1 cars. It was also a great way for students to learn about career pathways.

CJD Equipment gave students a tour of the facilities and showed a video on the company’s history. Students observed apprentices and tradespeople working on the heavy earthmoving equipment and were able to ask questions and even sit in some of the extremely large and expensive cabins of the earthmoving equipment on site.

Team members also had the chance to talk with staff about the competition and took pleasure in presenting their car designs and portfolios.

Mr Ian Gorrie (TAS Coordinator, Magdalene CHS) said “What a fantastic day had by both the students and even more so for the adults. All of the students finished up the day with such enthusiasm and renewed hopes for the up coming National Finals knowing that new industry links and relationships have been formed. These important collaborative opportunities bring what is learnt in the walls of the classroom to reality and the students can see that what they are achieving in this competition will flow through into a wide variety of careers and disciplines.”

MG My Gateway and MWLP, just two of the partners supporting students in this engineering and technology competition since 2008, made the link to industry for the teams.
